Quran 8:67

The Spoils of War سُوۡرَةُ الاٴنفَال Al-Anfal

8:67

مَا كَانَ لِنَبِىٍّ أَن يَكُونَ لَهُ ۥۤ أَسۡرَىٰ حَتَّىٰ يُثۡخِنَ فِى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ‌ۚ تُرِيدُونَ عَرَضَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا وَٱللَّهُ يُرِيدُ ٱلۡأَخِرَةَ‌ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ۬ ٦٧

Not even the prophet can acquire captives unless he participates in the fighting on Earth. You people are seeking the materials of this world, while ALLAH advocates the Hereafter. ALLAH is Almighty, Most Wise.

Reflect on the law of fighting in a war and thereby acquiring captives or prisoners of war. Quran teaches us that Muhammad had to actively engage and fight in wars, though he was the leader of the believers. He was not allowed to sit at home and conduct an absentee war with his followers doing the fighting alone. Neither could he acquire captives unless he participated in the war (8:67).
