Al-Hijr Valley

الٓر‌ۚ تِلۡكَ ءَايَـٰتُ ٱلۡڪِتَـٰبِ وَقُرۡءَانٍ۬ مُّبِينٍ۬ ١

A.L.R. These (letters) are proofs of this scripture; a profound Quran.

رُّبَمَا يَوَدُّ ٱلَّذِينَ ڪَفَرُواْ لَوۡ كَانُواْ مُسۡلِمِينَ ٢

Certainly, those who disbelieved will wish they were submitters.

ذَرۡهُمۡ يَأۡڪُلُواْ وَيَتَمَتَّعُواْ وَيُلۡهِهِمُ ٱلۡأَمَلُ‌ۖ فَسَوۡفَ يَعۡلَمُونَ ٣

Let them eat, enjoy, and remain blinded by wishful thinking; they will find out.

وَمَآ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَرۡيَةٍ إِلَّا وَلَهَا كِتَابٌ۬ مَّعۡلُومٌ۬ ٤

We never annihilated any community, except in accordance with a specific, predetermined time.

مَّا تَسۡبِقُ مِنۡ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا يَسۡتَـٔۡخِرُونَ ٥

The end of any community can never be advanced, nor delayed.

وَقَالُواْ يَـٰٓأَيُّہَا ٱلَّذِى نُزِّلَ عَلَيۡهِ ٱلذِّكۡرُ إِنَّكَ لَمَجۡنُونٌ۬ ٦

They said, "O you who received this reminder, you are crazy.

لَّوۡ مَا تَأۡتِينَا بِٱلۡمَلَـٰٓٮِٕكَةِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ ٧

"Why do you not bring down the angels, if you are truthful?"

مَا نُنَزِّلُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰٓٮِٕكَةَ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَمَا كَانُوٓاْ إِذً۬ا مُّنظَرِينَ ٨

We do not send down the angels except for specific functions. Otherwise, no one will be respited.

إِنَّا نَحۡنُ نَزَّلۡنَا ٱلذِّكۡرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ ۥ لَحَـٰفِظُونَ ٩

Absolutely, we have revealed the reminder, and, absolutely, we will preserve it.

وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِكَ فِى شِيَعِ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ ١٠

We have sent (messengers) before you to the communities in the past.

وَمَا يَأۡتِيہِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا كَانُواْ بِهِۦ يَسۡتَہۡزِءُونَ ١١

Every time a messenger went to them, they ridiculed him.

كَذَٲلِكَ نَسۡلُكُهُ ۥ فِى قُلُوبِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ ١٢

We thus control the minds of the guilty.

لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِهِۦ‌ۖ وَقَدۡ خَلَتۡ سُنَّةُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ ١٣

Consequently, they cannot believe in him. This has been the system since the past generations.

وَلَوۡ فَتَحۡنَا عَلَيۡہِم بَابً۬ا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَظَلُّواْ فِيهِ يَعۡرُجُونَ ١٤

Even if we opened for them a gate into the sky, through which they climb;

لَقَالُوٓاْ إِنَّمَا سُكِّرَتۡ أَبۡصَـٰرُنَا بَلۡ نَحۡنُ قَوۡمٌ۬ مَّسۡحُورُونَ ١٥

they will say, "Our eyes have been deceived. We have been bewitched."

وَلَقَدۡ جَعَلۡنَا فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ بُرُوجً۬ا وَزَيَّنَّـٰهَا لِلنَّـٰظِرِينَ ١٦

We placed galaxies in the sky, and adorned it for the beholders.

وَحَفِظۡنَـٰهَا مِن كُلِّ شَيۡطَـٰنٍ۬ رَّجِيمٍ ١٧

And we guarded it against every rejected devil.

إِلَّا مَنِ ٱسۡتَرَقَ ٱلسَّمۡعَ فَأَتۡبَعَهُ ۥ شِہَابٌ۬ مُّبِينٌ۬ ١٨

If any of them sneaks around to listen, a mighty projectile will chase him back.

وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ مَدَدۡنَـٰهَا وَأَلۡقَيۡنَا فِيهَا رَوَٲسِىَ وَأَنۢبَتۡنَا فِيہَا مِن كُلِّ شَىۡءٍ۬ مَّوۡزُونٍ۬ ١٩

As for the Earth, we constructed it, and placed on it stabilizers (mountains), and we grew on it a perfect balance of everything.

وَجَعَلۡنَا لَكُمۡ فِيہَا مَعَـٰيِشَ وَمَن لَّسۡتُمۡ لَهُ ۥ بِرَٲزِقِينَ ٢٠

We made it habitable for you, and for creatures you do not provide for.

وَإِن مِّن شَىۡءٍ إِلَّا عِندَنَا خَزَآٮِٕنُهُ ۥ وَمَا نُنَزِّلُهُ ۥۤ إِلَّا بِقَدَرٍ۬ مَّعۡلُومٍ۬ ٢١

There is nothing that we do not own infinite amounts thereof. But we send it down in precise measure.

وَأَرۡسَلۡنَا ٱلرِّيَـٰحَ لَوَٲقِحَ فَأَنزَلۡنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءً۬ فَأَسۡقَيۡنَـٰكُمُوهُ وَمَآ أَنتُمۡ لَهُ ۥ بِخَـٰزِنِينَ ٢٢

And we send the winds as pollinators, and cause water to come down from the sky for you to drink. Otherwise, you could not keep it palatable.

وَإِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ نُحۡىِۦ وَنُمِيتُ وَنَحۡنُ ٱلۡوَٲرِثُونَ ٢٣

It is we who control life and death, and we are the ultimate inheritors.

وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمۡنَا ٱلۡمُسۡتَقۡدِمِينَ مِنكُمۡ وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمۡنَا ٱلۡمُسۡتَـٔۡخِرِينَ ٢٤

And we fully know those among you who advance, and we fully know those who regress.

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَحۡشُرُهُمۡ‌ۚ إِنَّهُ ۥ حَكِيمٌ عَلِيمٌ۬ ٢٥

Your Lord will surely summon them. He is Most Wise, Omniscient.

وَلَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ مِن صَلۡصَـٰلٍ۬ مِّنۡ حَمَإٍ۬ مَّسۡنُونٍ۬ ٢٦

We created the human being from aged mud, like the potter’s clay.

وَٱلۡجَآنَّ خَلَقۡنَـٰهُ مِن قَبۡلُ مِن نَّارِ ٱلسَّمُومِ ٢٧

As for the jinns, we created them, before that, from blazing fire.

وَإِذۡ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلۡمَلَـٰٓٮِٕكَةِ إِنِّى خَـٰلِقُۢ بَشَرً۬ا مِّن صَلۡصَـٰلٍ۬ مِّنۡ حَمَإٍ۬ مَّسۡنُونٍ۬ ٢٨

Your Lord said to the angels, "I am creating a human being from aged mud, like the potter’s clay.

فَإِذَا سَوَّيۡتُهُ ۥ وَنَفَخۡتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِى فَقَعُواْ لَهُ ۥ سَـٰجِدِينَ ٢٩

"Once I perfect him, and blow into him from My spirit, you shall fall prostrate before him."

فَسَجَدَ ٱلۡمَلَـٰٓٮِٕكَةُ ڪُلُّهُمۡ أَجۡمَعُونَ ٣٠

The angels fell prostrate; all of them,

إِلَّآ إِبۡلِيسَ أَبَىٰٓ أَن يَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَ ٣١

except iblees (satan). He refused to be with the prostrators.

قَالَ يَـٰٓإِبۡلِيسُ مَا لَكَ أَلَّا تَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَ ٣٢

He said, "O iblees (satan), why are you not with the prostrators?"

قَالَ لَمۡ أَكُن لِّأَسۡجُدَ لِبَشَرٍ خَلَقۡتَهُ ۥ مِن صَلۡصَـٰلٍ۬ مِّنۡ حَمَإٍ۬ مَّسۡنُونٍ۬ ٣٣

He said, "I am not to prostrate before a human being, whom You created from aged mud, like the potter’s clay."

قَالَ فَٱخۡرُجۡ مِنۡہَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمٌ۬ ٣٤

He said, "Therefore, you must get out; you are banished.

وَإِنَّ عَلَيۡكَ ٱللَّعۡنَةَ إِلَىٰ يَوۡمِ ٱلدِّينِ ٣٥

"You have incurred My condemnation until the Day of Judgment."

قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنظِرۡنِىٓ إِلَىٰ يَوۡمِ يُبۡعَثُونَ ٣٦

He said, "My Lord, respite me until the day they are resurrected."

قَالَ فَإِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُنظَرِينَ ٣٧

He said, "You are respited.

إِلَىٰ يَوۡمِ ٱلۡوَقۡتِ ٱلۡمَعۡلُومِ ٣٨

"Until the specified day and time."

قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَآ أَغۡوَيۡتَنِى لَأُزَيِّنَنَّ لَهُمۡ فِى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَأُغۡوِيَنَّہُمۡ أَجۡمَعِينَ ٣٩

He said, "My Lord, since You have willed that I go astray, I will surely entice them on Earth; I will send them all astray.

إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنۡہُمُ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِينَ ٤٠

"Except those among Your worshipers who are devoted absolutely to You."

قَالَ هَـٰذَا صِرَٲطٌ عَلَىَّ مُسۡتَقِيمٌ ٤١

He said, "This is a law that is inviolable.

إِنَّ عِبَادِى لَيۡسَ لَكَ عَلَيۡہِمۡ سُلۡطَـٰنٌ إِلَّا مَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ ٱلۡغَاوِينَ ٤٢

"You have no power over My (devoted) servants. You only have power over the strayers who follow you.

وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمَوۡعِدُهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِينَ ٤٣

"And Hell awaits them all.

لَهَا سَبۡعَةُ أَبۡوَٲبٍ۬ لِّكُلِّ بَابٍ۬ مِّنۡہُمۡ جُزۡءٌ۬ مَّقۡسُومٌ ٤٤

"It will have seven gates. Each gate will get a specific share of them."

إِنَّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ۬ وَعُيُونٍ ٤٥

As for the righteous, they will enjoy gardens and springs.

ٱدۡخُلُوهَا بِسَلَـٰمٍ ءَامِنِينَ ٤٦

Enter therein, peaceful and secure.

وَنَزَعۡنَا مَا فِى صُدُورِهِم مِّنۡ غِلٍّ إِخۡوَٲنًا عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ۬ مُّتَقَـٰبِلِينَ ٤٧

We remove all jealousy from their hearts. Like one family, they will be on adjacent furnishings.

لَا يَمَسُّهُمۡ فِيهَا نَصَبٌ۬ وَمَا هُم مِّنۡہَا بِمُخۡرَجِينَ ٤٨

Never will they suffer any fatigue therein; never will they be evicted therefrom.

نَبِّئۡ عِبَادِىٓ أَنِّىٓ أَنَا ٱلۡغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ ٤٩

Inform My servants that I am the Forgiver, Most Merciful.

وَأَنَّ عَذَابِى هُوَ ٱلۡعَذَابُ ٱلۡأَلِيمُ ٥٠

And that My retribution is the most painful retribution.

وَنَبِّئۡهُمۡ عَن ضَيۡفِ إِبۡرَٲهِيمَ ٥١

Inform them about Abraham’s guests.

إِذۡ دَخَلُواْ عَلَيۡهِ فَقَالُواْ سَلَـٰمً۬ا قَالَ إِنَّا مِنكُمۡ وَجِلُونَ ٥٢

When they entered his quarters, they said, "Peace." He said, "We are apprehensive about you."

قَالُواْ لَا تَوۡجَلۡ إِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَـٰمٍ عَلِيمٍ۬ ٥٣

They said, "Do not be apprehensive. We have good news for you: an enlightened son."

قَالَ أَبَشَّرۡتُمُونِى عَلَىٰٓ أَن مَّسَّنِىَ ٱلۡڪِبَرُ فَبِمَ تُبَشِّرُونَ ٥٤

He said, "How can you give me such good news, when I am so old? Do you still give me this good news?"

قَالُواْ بَشَّرۡنَـٰكَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ فَلَا تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلۡقَـٰنِطِينَ ٥٥

They said, "The good news we give you is true; do not despair."

قَالَ وَمَن يَقۡنَطُ مِن رَّحۡمَةِ رَبِّهِۤ إِلَّا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ ٥٦

He said, "None despairs of his Lord’s mercy, except the strayers."

قَالَ فَمَا خَطۡبُكُمۡ أَيُّہَا ٱلۡمُرۡسَلُونَ ٥٧

He said, "What is your mission, O messengers?"

قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّآ أُرۡسِلۡنَآ إِلَىٰ قَوۡمٍ۬ مُّجۡرِمِينَ ٥٨

They said, "We are being dispatched to guilty people.

إِلَّآ ءَالَ لُوطٍ إِنَّا لَمُنَجُّوهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِينَ ٥٩

"As for Lot’s family, we will save them all.

إِلَّا ٱمۡرَأَتَهُ ۥ قَدَّرۡنَآ‌ۙ إِنَّہَا لَمِنَ ٱلۡغَـٰبِرِينَ ٦٠

"But not his wife; she is destined to be with the doomed."

فَلَمَّا جَآءَ ءَالَ لُوطٍ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلُونَ ٦١

The messengers went to Lot’s town.

قَالَ إِنَّكُمۡ قَوۡمٌ۬ مُّنڪَرُونَ ٦٢

He said, "You are unknown people."

قَالُواْ بَلۡ جِئۡنَـٰكَ بِمَا كَانُواْ فِيهِ يَمۡتَرُونَ ٦٣

They said, "We bring to you what they have been doubting.

وَأَتَيۡنَـٰكَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَإِنَّا لَصَـٰدِقُونَ ٦٤

"We bring to you the truth; we are truthful.

فَأَسۡرِ بِأَهۡلِكَ بِقِطۡعٍ۬ مِّنَ ٱلَّيۡلِ وَٱتَّبِعۡ أَدۡبَـٰرَهُمۡ وَلَا يَلۡتَفِتۡ مِنكُمۡ أَحَدٌ۬ وَٱمۡضُواْ حَيۡثُ تُؤۡمَرُونَ ٦٥

"You shall take your family during the night. Stay behind them, and make sure that none of you looks back. Go straight as commanded."

وَقَضَيۡنَآ إِلَيۡهِ ذَٲلِكَ ٱلۡأَمۡرَ أَنَّ دَابِرَ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ مَقۡطُوعٌ۬ مُّصۡبِحِينَ ٦٦

We delivered to him this command: those people are to be annihilated in the morning.

وَجَآءَ أَهۡلُ ٱلۡمَدِينَةِ يَسۡتَبۡشِرُونَ ٦٧

The people of the city came joyfully.

قَالَ إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ ضَيۡفِى فَلَا تَفۡضَحُونِ ٦٨

He said, "These are my guests; do not embarrass me.

وَٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَلَا تُخۡزُونِ ٦٩

"Fear ALLAH, and do not shame me."

قَالُوٓاْ أَوَلَمۡ نَنۡهَكَ عَنِ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ ٧٠

They said, "Did we not enjoin you from contacting anyone?"

قَالَ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ بَنَاتِىٓ إِن كُنتُمۡ فَـٰعِلِينَ ٧١

He said, "Here are my daughters, if you must."

لَعَمۡرُكَ إِنَّہُمۡ لَفِى سَكۡرَتِہِمۡ يَعۡمَهُونَ ٧٢

But, alas, they were totally blinded by their lust.

فَأَخَذَتۡہُمُ ٱلصَّيۡحَةُ مُشۡرِقِينَ ٧٣

Consequently, the disaster struck them in the morning.

فَجَعَلۡنَا عَـٰلِيَہَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمۡطَرۡنَا عَلَيۡہِمۡ حِجَارَةً۬ مِّن سِجِّيلٍ ٧٤

We turned it upside down, and showered them with devastating rocks.

إِنَّ فِى ذَٲلِكَ لَأَيَـٰتٍ۬ لِّلۡمُتَوَسِّمِينَ ٧٥

This is a lesson for those who possess intelligence.

وَإِنَّہَا لَبِسَبِيلٍ۬ مُّقِيمٍ ٧٦

This will always be the system.

إِنَّ فِى ذَٲلِكَ لَأَيَةً۬ لِّلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ ٧٧

This is a sign for the believers.

وَإِن كَانَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡأَيۡكَةِ لَظَـٰلِمِينَ ٧٨

The people of the woods also were transgressors.

فَٱنتَقَمۡنَا مِنۡہُمۡ وَإِنَّہُمَا لَبِإِمَامٍ۬ مُّبِينٍ۬ ٧٩

Consequently, we avenged from them, and both communities are fully documented.

وَلَقَدۡ كَذَّبَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡحِجۡرِ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ ٨٠

The people of Al-Hijr disbelieved the messengers.

وَءَاتَيۡنَـٰهُمۡ ءَايَـٰتِنَا فَكَانُواْ عَنۡہَا مُعۡرِضِينَ ٨١

We gave them our revelations, but they disregarded them.

وَكَانُواْ يَنۡحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡجِبَالِ بُيُوتًا ءَامِنِينَ ٨٢

They used to carve secure homes out of the mountains.

فَأَخَذَتۡہُمُ ٱلصَّيۡحَةُ مُصۡبِحِينَ ٨٣

The disaster hit them in the morning.

فَمَآ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡہُم مَّا كَانُواْ يَكۡسِبُونَ ٨٤

What they hoarded did not help them.

وَمَا خَلَقۡنَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٲتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَمَا بَيۡنَہُمَآ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّ‌ۗ وَإِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ لَأَتِيَةٌ۬‌ۖ فَٱصۡفَحِ ٱلصَّفۡحَ ٱلۡجَمِيلَ ٨٥

We did not create the Heavens and the Earth, and everything between them, except for a specific purpose. The end of the world will come, so treat them with benign neglect.

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ ٱلۡخَلَّـٰقُ ٱلۡعَلِيمُ ٨٦

Your Lord is the Creator, the Omniscient.

وَلَقَدۡ ءَاتَيۡنَـٰكَ سَبۡعً۬ا مِّنَ ٱلۡمَثَانِى وَٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ ٱلۡعَظِيمَ ٨٧

We have given you the seven pairs, and the great Quran.

لَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَيۡنَيۡكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعۡنَا بِهِۦۤ أَزۡوَٲجً۬ا مِّنۡهُمۡ وَلَا تَحۡزَنۡ عَلَيۡہِمۡ وَٱخۡفِضۡ جَنَاحَكَ لِلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ ٨٨

Do not be jealous of what we bestowed upon the other (messengers), and do not be saddened (by the disbelievers), and lower your wing for the believers.

وَقُلۡ إِنِّىٓ أَنَا ٱلنَّذِيرُ ٱلۡمُبِينُ ٨٩

And proclaim: "I am the manifest warner."

كَمَآ أَنزَلۡنَا عَلَى ٱلۡمُقۡتَسِمِينَ ٩٠

We will deal with the dividers.

ٱلَّذِينَ جَعَلُواْ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ عِضِينَ ٩١

They accept the Quran only partially.

فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَسۡـَٔلَنَّهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِينَ ٩٢

By your Lord, we will question them all,

عَمَّا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ ٩٣

about everything they have done.

فَٱصۡدَعۡ بِمَا تُؤۡمَرُ وَأَعۡرِضۡ عَنِ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ ٩٤

Therefore, carry out the orders given to you, and disregard the idol worshipers.

إِنَّا كَفَيۡنَـٰكَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَہۡزِءِينَ ٩٥

We will spare you the mockers,

ٱلَّذِينَ يَجۡعَلُونَ مَعَ ٱللهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ‌ۚ فَسَوۡفَ يَعۡلَمُونَ ٩٦

who set up another god beside ALLAH. They will surely find out.

وَلَقَدۡ نَعۡلَمُ أَنَّكَ يَضِيقُ صَدۡرُكَ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ ٩٧

We know full well that you may be annoyed by their utterances.

فَسَبِّحۡ بِحَمۡدِ رَبِّكَ وَكُن مِّنَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَ ٩٨

You shall glorify and praise your Lord, and be with the prostrators.

وَٱعۡبُدۡ رَبَّكَ حَتَّىٰ يَأۡتِيَكَ ٱلۡيَقِينُ ٩٩

And worship your Lord, in order to attain certainty.
