This Appendix is meant to serve as a reference tool for those who are unfamiliar with the terms Arabic Letters, Allah Letters, Quranic Initials, Messenger Letters, Messenger Initials, etc. Understanding what these terms are is critical to understanding the miracles and proofs of the Quran.

Arabic Letters

The term “Arabic Letters” refers to the number of Arabic Letters in a word, phrase, or verse. There are 28 letters in the Arabic alphabet, as shown below.

An example is the word “Allah”, or الله in Arabic. This has 4 Arabic letters – 1 Aleef, 2 lam, and 1 ha. Another example is the phrase “In the name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful”, or in Arabic: بِسْمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ . This phrase has 19 Arabic letters, Praise be to Allah.

Allah Letters

The term “Allah Letters” refers to the count, in a particular word, phrase, or verse of the 3 Arabic letters which constitute the word “Allah” or الله (Allah being the Creator of the Universe and the Author of the Quran). Thus, Allah Letters are the occurrences of the letters Aleef, lam, or ha in that specific word, phrase, or verse.

Though there are 3 Allah Letters, there are 4 Arabic Letters in the Allah, as the lam occurs twice. The letters in Allah are Aleef, lam, lam, ha. The Gematrical Value (see section Gematrical Value below) of the word Allah is therefore 1 + 30 + 30 + 5 = 66.

Count of Allah

The “Count of Allah” is the number of times the word الله appears, usually in a verse or a portion of a verse. Throughout this Quran, the word الله is highlighted in red to help easily identify the occurrences. For example, in verse 16:18, there are 2 counts of Allah.

The total count of Allah in the Quran is 2698, which is 19 x 142, Praise be to Allah.

Quranic Initials

Out of the 28 Arabic Letters, 14 are called “Quranic Initials”. These 14 letters refer to the “initials” that begin 29 chapters in the Quran as the first verse in such chapters. The Quranic Initials in these 29 chapters are given below.

Note 1: This initial is unique. It occurs in one sura (chapter 68) and the name of the letter is spelled out as 3 letters – nun waw nun. It is therefore counted as two “N’s.”

Thus, the 14 Quranic Initials are:

Messenger’s Letters

The term “Messenger’s Letters” refers to the Arabic Letters that comprise the name of the messenger Makbool Husain. These are the letters meem, qaf, ba, waw, and lam (for Makbool) and Ha, seen, ya, nun (for Husain). Thus, the Gematrical Value of Makbool is 40 + 100 + 2 + 6 + 30 = 178 and the Gematrical Value for Husain is 8 + 60 + 10 + 50 = 128. The Gematrical Value for Makbool Husain is 178 + 128 = 306.

Note that the number of chapters that have a verse 178 is 5 – chapters 2, 3, 7, 26, and 37. The number of chapters that have a verse 128 is 9 – chapters 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 16, 20, 26, and 37 – and the sum of 5 and 9 is 14, Praise be to Allah.

Messenger’s Initials

The term “Messenger’s Initials” refers to the Arabic Letters that comprise the name of the messenger Makbool Hussain that are also Quranic Initials. There are precisely 7 Messenger’s Initials, confirming the Miracle of 7. These letters are meem, qaf, lam, Ha, seen, ya, and nun.

Gematrical Value

The “Gematrical Value” is the value assigned to each letter of the Arabic alphabet. This system arose before numeral systems were imported, such as the Hindu numeral system, which the Arabs brought to the West, which is now the one used in Indo-European languages (such as English) and referred to as the Hindu-Arabic numeral system. The most notable of the gematrical value systems is the Roman numeral system, in which letters are assigned values and used as numbers. For example, in the roman numeral system, “I” is 1, “II” is 2, “V” is 5” and “VI’ is 6. When the Quran was revealed 14 centuries ago, the numbers known today did not exist. A universal system of the Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek alphabets were used as numbers.

In the Arabic gematrical value system, each of the 28 Arabic letters corresponds to a value. Please refer to the table in the section Arabic Letters above for the gematrical values of each letter. For example, the gematrical value of Allah - الله is 66, as it contains the letters Aleef, lam, lam, and ha, which have values of 1 + 30 + 30 + 5 = 66.
